Search is splitting in two

For twenty years, “being found” meant ranking a blue link on Google. That still matters — but a growing share of people now ask ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity or Google’s AI Overviews to just answer the question, and those answer engines cite a handful of sources instead of returning ten links.

AI search optimization — you’ll also see it called Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) or Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) — is the work of making sure your site is the source those engines pick. It rests on three pillars: access, comprehension and trust.

Pillar 1 — Access: can they reach you?

Nothing else matters if the crawler never sees the page. AI engines use named crawlers (GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended) and each one obeys — or is blocked by — your robots.txt. A blanket “block all AI” rule, or a CDN that drops bot-shaped requests at the edge, quietly removes you from the running.

  • Allow the live-retrieval bots you want citations from.
  • Make sure no CDN/WAF rule blocks them before robots.txt is read.
  • Serve real content in the HTML — most AI crawlers don’t run JavaScript.

Pillar 2 — Comprehension: can they understand you?

Once a crawler can reach the page, it has to parse it. Answer engines favour content that is server-rendered, cleanly structured, and explicitly labelled with machine-readable metadata.

  • Server-render the meaningful content (not a JS-only shell).
  • Use semantic HTML and a clean heading outline (one clear H1, logical H2s).
  • Add valid structured data (JSON-LD) so entities are unambiguous.
  • Publish an llms.txt that maps your most important pages.
  • Answer the question directly and early — don’t bury the lede.

Pillar 3 — Trust: can they attribute you?

AI engines prefer sources they can stand behind — content with clear authorship, an identifiable organization, and dates. This is how an engine decides whether your page is a citable authority or an anonymous blob.

  • Mark up author and organization with schema.org (Person, Organization).
  • Show published and updated dates, and keep content current.
  • Be consistent across your site — same entity, same details.
  • Cite your own sources; specificity reads as credibility.
